A massive landslide occurred in Balutar, Sikkim on Tuesday morning. Due to this, the power station of the Teesta Stage 5 dam of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) located there was completely destroyed. A video of this has also surfaced. In the video, a large part of the mountain can be seen falling on the power plant.
The relief is that there is no news of any casualties in this. Actually, the powerhouse was evacuated a few days ago. However, the employees working at the powerhouse have recorded the landslide on their phones.
Due to heavy rains in Sikkim, incidents of landslides have been reported in many parts. The Stage 5 dam became inactive after the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in the Teesta River basin in October 2023. The dam destroyed due to the flood is being rebuilt.
