Kathmandu: In a historic move, Nepal has appointed Sushila Karki as the country’s first woman Prime Minister. Her appointment comes in the wake of widespread unrest and political instability following the resignation of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, who stepped down amid growing protests and national crisis.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace, Shital Niwas, where President exercised constitutional authority under Article 61 to appoint Karki as the head of an interim government. This decision marks a significant moment in Nepal’s political history, placing a woman at the nation’s highest executive office for the very first time.

Sushila Karki is no stranger to leadership. She previously served as Nepal’s Chief Justice, becoming the first woman to hold that position in 2016. An alumnus of Banaras Hindu University, where she earned a Master’s degree in Political Science, Karki is widely respected for her judicial and administrative expertise. Her extensive experience is seen as crucial in steering the nation through this period of crisis.

Nepal has been reeling under the impact of violent protests and mass uprisings, leaving the country without a functioning government. The interim arrangement now places Karki at the helm, tasked with restoring stability until fresh elections are conducted.

According to the agreement, Nepal will hold national elections within the next six months, allowing the people to elect a permanent government. Until then, Prime Minister Karki will lead efforts to maintain law and order and prepare the country for a democratic transition.

Her appointment not only breaks political barriers but also symbolizes a new chapter in Nepal’s democratic journey, offering hope for stability and progress in the coming months.
