At least 22 people, including five security personnel, were injured in a communal clash over a social media post on Tuesday in Nepalgunj, about 400 km west of Kathmandu. Following the clash, the Banke district administration imposed indefinite curfew in the town bordering Uttar Pradesh from 1 pm on Tuesday.
Banke Chief District Officer Bipin Acharya said curfew has been extended and people who entered Nepal through Jamunha Point are being transported to their destinations. He said the district administration would hold an all-party meeting as soon as possible to calm the situation in the city.
According to Jamunha Senior Superintendent of Police Min Bahadur Bista, so far 1,500 Nepalese who came from India have been safely transported to their destination. He said Nepalis from various places in India including Shimla, Kalapahar and Delhi are returning home through Jamunha Point in the district.
Meanwhile, the local administration has urged everyone to cooperate to ease the situation and not to upload any content on social sites that could endanger social and religious harmony. Nepalgunj-based political parties, religious leaders, civil society activists and intellectuals have appealed to restore peace and harmony in the city.
