The troubles of the Pakistan cricket team in the current World Cup are showing no sign of abating. Babar Azam-led Pakistan suffered a one-wicket defeat at the hands of South Africa in Chennai and after this, it received a severe punishment from the ICC.

Pakistan did not complete its 50 overs on time against South Africa, due to which the entire team has been fined 20 percent of the match fee. This decision has been taken under Article 2.2 of the ICC's Players and Player Support Persons Act, which penalizes over-rate offenses.

ICC Elite Panel of Emirates Match Referees member Richie Richardson approved the fine. It was found that Babar Azam's team was four overs behind schedule. According to the ICC Code of Conduct, players are fined five percent for being one over behind. In such a situation, a 20 percent penalty was imposed for being four overs behind.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has accepted his mistake and agreed to the fine imposed. The result is that a formal hearing is not necessary. The fines were imposed by on-field umpires Alex Wharfe, Paul Reiffel, third umpire Richard Illingworth, and fourth umpire Richard Kettleborough.

Pakistan had made a strong start to the World Cup 2023 campaign and was believed to be a strong contender for the title. But Babar Azam's team lost its rhythm and suffered its fourth consecutive defeat in the current tournament. Pakistan's team led by Babar Azam is almost out of the race for the semi-finals. Pakistan's troubles have only increased with this fine.
