A foul smell was reported inside a dilapidated building at the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose, a small town about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Denver. After which police officers were called to the building on Tuesday night itself in connection with the suspicious incident. When Fremont County Sheriff's Office officers arrived at the scene with a search warrant, they found improperly stored remains.

By October 13, all the remains had been removed from the site, but officials said the number could change again as the identification process continued. Local officials said they would begin notifying family members as soon as the remains were identified in the coming days.
