Chinese hackers who breached Microsoft's email platform earlier this year stole thousands of emails from US State Department accounts, a Senate staffer told Reuters on Wednesday.

The staffer, who attended a briefing of State Department IT officials on Wednesday, said officials told lawmakers that 60,000 emails were stolen from 10 different State Department accounts. Although the names of the victims were not released, all but one of them were working in East Asia and the Pacific.

A staffer working for Senator Eric Schmidt shared details of the briefing on condition of anonymity. The US State Department did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
