In a statement issued by Chief Minister N Biren Singh's secretariat late on Monday night, the state government said the case has already been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to news agency PTI, the two students have been identified as Phizam Hemjit (20) and Hizam Linthoingambi (17).
"The state police, in collaboration with central security agencies, is actively investigating the case to ascertain the circumstances surrounding their disappearance and identify the culprits behind the murder of the two students," the statement said. A search operation has also been started to nab the criminals."
A senior official said, "Security personnel have been put on alert and additional steps have been taken to prevent any incident after the pictures of the students went viral. The government assured the people that the kidnapping and murder of Phizam Hemjit and Hizam Linthoingambi “Immediate and decisive action will be taken against all those involved in the murder.”
It said the government is committed to ensuring justice and will severely punish any culprit found responsible for this heinous crime. The administration urged people to exercise restraint and allow authorities to investigate. Two photographs of missing students surfaced on social media on Monday night.
Of the two photographs, one reportedly showed students with two armed men and the other showed two dead bodies. Both the students had gone missing on July 6. Police had earlier said that the duo could not be traced and their mobile phones were found switched off. He had earlier said that the last location of the students' phones was found in Lamdan near the winter flower tourist spot in Churachandpur district.
