Kidney smuggling was happening for the rich in Pakistan
Police caught the doctor-mechanic; CM's claim- each kidney was sold for 98 lakhs
In Pakistan's Punjab province, police have busted a gang that was engaged in organ smuggling for rich people. The police have arrested a doctor and a motor mechanic. He is accused of running an organ trafficking gang. According to Pakistan Police, the name of the doctor is Fawad Mukhtar.
It has conducted at least 328 illegal kidney transplants. He has been arrested five times before on other charges. However, he was left on bail every time. Fawad performed surgery on people without their knowledge. The motor mechanic helped him in this work as an assistant.
Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi claims hundreds of illegal surgeries took place
Chief Minister of Punjab province Mohsin Naqvi said during a press conference on Sunday night, 'The facts and figures that have come to us are heart-wrenching. He said the figures given by the police in the investigation. More than that, there have been transplants and illegal surgeries.
Mohsin Naqvi said that the transplants were done in private clinics. The accused used to sell one kidney for Rs 98 lakh. According to Punjab Police, the entire gang was being run by 8 people together. Who were active in Eastern Punjab province as well as Pakistan occupied Kashmir. At least three people have died in a botched kidney transplant.
Human trafficking is illegal in Pakistan
The Government of Pakistan outlawed human organ trafficking in 2010. Also made provision for strict punishment. If human trafficking is confirmed in Pakistan, there is a provision of 10 years in jail and heavy fine.
In January, Punjab Police had busted another organ trafficking gang. When a missing 14-year-old boy was found in an underground lab after his kidney was removed.
