Jadavpur University - Following objections from the West Bengal government, Jadavpur University has canceled the annual convocation to be held in December and the Executive Council (EC) meeting to discuss key issues such as the university budget for the second time in a month. This meeting was to be held on Friday. The last meeting of the EC, the highest decision making body of the university, could not be held on November 04 on this basis.

In a letter to JU registrar Snehamanju Basu, a senior official of the higher education department said that in the absence of any "regular" VC, Professor Buddhadev Sao has been authorized to perform the duties of the vice-chancellor.

JU Registrar Snehamanju Basu said that today's EC meeting could not be held. I have nothing further to comment on this matter. The letter to Basu said that holding an EC meeting without the approval of the state government would be a violation of rules. No such approval has been issued by the State Government

All Bengal University Teachers Association expressed concern
The All Bengal University Teachers Association (ABUTA) expressed concern over the development, saying cancellation of the meeting could lead to uncertainties in holding the convocation, awarding degrees to students, paying staff salaries and other budgetary allocations. "We demand immediate revocation of the state notice which is undemocratic and anti-student," said ABUTA's JU convenor Debabrata Bera.

The case is pending in the Supreme Court
Education Minister Bratya Basu had earlier said that the acting VC cannot call this meeting as his appointment by Governor CV Anand Bose has not been approved by the Higher Education Department. The case of unilateral appointment of Vice Chancellors by the Governor in many universities of the state is pending in the Supreme Court.
