Nowadays, postponement or cancellation of any series has become a common thing in the cricket world. Australia Cricket declined to play its T20 series against Afghanistan a few days ago. Many Afghan cricket players had threatened to withdraw from the Big Bash League following this, but they decided against it. The August white ball cricket series between Australia and Cricket Ireland has now been postponed due to a precarious economic situation.

Before the major series against England that consists of three ODIs and five T20Is, Australia was supposed to tour Ireland in August for three ODIs and a T20I series. Warren Deutrom, the CEO of Cricket Ireland, confirmed on Monday that the series had been postponed because the board considered the expected financial loss it would incur to the organisation.

“The simple fact for us was that we have very few pitches in Ireland that can host international cricket, so we had to make a very difficult decision,” Deutrom told The Final Word podcast, as quoted by Wisden. For this, we will have to open Malahide Cricket Ground, and if we go to do that then we estimate that opening Malahide will be a loss for us. Last year in August, Ireland hosted India for a three-match T20I series, which saw the return of Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah to the game after a long layoff due to injury.

In 2022, Afghanistan toured Ireland for a five-match T20 series in Belfast, which also required some temporary infrastructure. Last year, Ireland played a home ODI series against Bangladesh at the Chelmsford County Ground in England and also played their 'home' matches against South Africa in England.
