The real name of Sundar Pichai of Indian origin is Sundararajan. He was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu in 1972, but grew up in Chennai. His mother Lakshmi was a stenographer and his father Raghunath Pichai an electrical engineer. It is said that he lived in a small two-room apartment. Here he and his younger brother used to sleep on the floor. In an interview, Pichai said that for most of his childhood, he did not have facilities like a television or a car. Sometimes there was no water in his house. At the age of 12, his family received the first rotary telephone.

Pichai says that this telephone introduced him to the world of technology. He was attracted to the tech industry by watching the work of his father, who was an electrical engineer at British conglomerate GEC. He performed very well in school and studied engineering at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

After completing his engineering studies at IIT Kharagpur, Sundar Pichai got a scholarship from Stanford University, USA. This was a big opportunity for him, but it was not easy for his family to afford to go to America. Pichai's father sent him to America with the one thousand dollars he had saved. Pichai had told in an interview in 2014 that his parents did what any parent would do. He spent his entire life's savings on educating his child.

Sundar joined Google in April 2004. Sundar Pichai's first project in Google was given in the Product Management and Innovation branch. Here he was given the task of improving Google's search tool and bringing users of other browsers to Google. During this time, Sundar suggested to the company that Google should launch its browser.

Sundar contributed significantly to the development of Google Chrome, which was released in 2008, and the Android operating system. His ideas and efforts brought him to the notice of Larry Page, the founder of Google. In 2015, he was appointed CEO of Google after serving in roles as Product Chief and Head of the Android Operating System.

Google's product portfolio has grown dramatically since Pichai took over as CEO, and now includes Google Assistant, Google Home, Google Pixel, and Google Workshop. When it came to implementing artificial intelligence (AI), he led the way. However some investors have questioned Alphabet's AI projects' capacity to compete with OpenAI, and the company has received criticism for them. Nevertheless, the company's investments in AI are beginning to pay off, according to last week's earnings.

Pichai's net worth includes $424 million worth of existing shares and about $600 million from shares sold after becoming CEO. It is believed that taxes have been paid on the shares sold and then reinvested in the stock market.

Narendra Desai, who worked with Pichai in his early days at Google, says that Pichai becoming a billionaire is proof of how much work he has done while holding the top position of the company. “This tells me, first of all, that they have done the right thing for the shareholders,” he said. They have benefited because Google's shares have done really well.
