The Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Prahlad Joshi, has just released a statement regarding the rise in renewable energy within India. Joshi said in an address to the Hamburg Sustainability Conference in Germany on Monday that India had achieved some feats in the direction of renewable energy.

He said, "Having the lowest per capita emissions amongst G20 countries, India is the only G20 country that has achieved its climate goals ahead of time." He further said energy security and access remain key needs for India, but that has not restrained the commitment to energy transition both at the national and global levels.

The Union Minister Joshi has stated that there is a phenomenal growth in renewable energy capacity of the country, with an increase of 175% from 75 GW in 2014 to over 208 GW, and total RE increased from 193.5 billion units to 360 BU, which represents an increase of 86% during this period.

The capacity of solar energy has also swelled 33 times in the last decade. He said that the International Solar Alliance, with support from over 100 countries, demonstrates India's leading role in the world in combating climate change with the help of solar energy.

Speaking on the topic of green shipping, Joshi noted the crucial contribution of the maritime sector towards global trade and in the emission of greenhouse gases. He further said, "As we move forward to achieve net-zero emissions, the demand for maritime transport has proved to be very crucial. With government initiatives, technology advancements, and international cooperation, India is indeed doing well in the green shipping sector."
