Former Australian Tim Paine captain who played only 12 T20Is became the head coach, will take charge from this day
BBL Update: Tim Paine has replaced Jason Gillespie, who stepped down as head coach in March after guiding the team for four seasons.
Ex-Australian Test captain Tim Paine was appointed as the new coach of the Adelaide Strikers for two years. The big bash league club announced this on Thursday. Former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine replaced Jason Gillespie, who resigned in March from his position as head coach after coaching for four years. His first task as Strikers coach will be to take part in the BBL 14 Player Draft on September 1, alongside captain Matt Short.
The 39-year-old Paine was assistant coach to Gillespie last summer after retiring from playing in 2022. Less than two years since he played his final match in the BBL with the Hobart Hurricanes, Paine has taken to coaching. He has also been a coach and mentor with Australia's Under-19 program, and he is currently in Darwin as an assistant coach with the NT Strike in the Top End T20 Series.
Tim Paine represented Australia in 35 Tests (23 of which as captain) as well as 35 ODIs and 12 T20Is during his 17-year senior playing career. In his playing days, he also scored nearly 6,500 first-class runs (including three centuries) and over 5,600 runs in limited-overs cricket. Paine said in a statement released by the club, "I am honored and excited by the opportunity to coach a well-established and strongly supported club. I am eagerly looking forward to the start of BBL 14 in December."
