BSNL in Kerala's Wayanad district has provided free unlimited calls and data usage for three days to all customers in the landslide-affected area of Wayanad district and Nilambur taluk. A BSNL release on Saturday said that users will also get 100 free SMS per day.

BSNL is also providing free mobile connections to all the affected people of Choorlamala and Mundakkai villages. The only mobile tower in Choorlamala belongs to BSNL. Recently, Choorlamala and Meppadi mobile towers have been converted to 4G. The government had announced significant improvements in telecom infrastructure to provide better mobile connectivity to pilgrims participating in the Amarnath Yatra. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has said that infrastructure has been worked out to provide continuous coverage on the travel routes in collaboration with major telecom service providers including Airtel, BSNL, and Jio.

The Department of Telecommunications said, "A total of 82 sites (Airtel, RJIL and BSNL) will be active to ensure coverage. A total of 31 new sites have been set up on the travel routes, increasing the total number from 51 in 2023 to 82 in 2024. This enhancement aims to provide mobile connectivity to pilgrims and the general public. According to the department, 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G technology facilities have been provided at many places for pilgrims and the general public on the routes from Lakhanpur to Qazigund and Qazigund to Pahalgam and Baltal.
