Kapil Dev, captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, entered the 65th year of his life on Saturday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent birthday wishes to the great players of the cricket world. BCCI posted on social media, 'Many happy birthday wishes to the greatest all-rounder of Team India.' Along with this, BCCI has also shared a picture of Kapil Dev and his influential international figures.

Kapil Dev, born on January 6, 1959, is the only player in the history of cricket to have taken more than 400 wickets (434 wickets) in Tests and scored more than five thousand runs. He captained the Indian cricket team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, becoming the first Indian captain to win the Cricket World Cup. He achieved this feat at the age of 24, hence he is still the youngest captain to win the World Cup for any team. Kapil Dev retired in 1994 as the first player to take 200 ODI wickets and held the world record for most wickets in Test cricket, a record later broken by Courtney Walsh in 2000.

Kapil Dev held the record for the highest individual score (175 not out) by a batsman batting at number five or lower in ODIs until 2023, which was broken by Australia's Glenn Maxwell. After retiring from cricket, he coached the Indian national team between September 1999 and September 2000.

Kapil Dev was awarded Padma Shri in 1982 and Padma Bhushan in 1991. In 2002, he was named the Indian Cricketer of the Century by Wisden. On 11 March 2010, Kapil Dev was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. In 2013, he was awarded the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor given to a former player by the BCCI.
