The US automobile sector may face another industry-wide airbag recall. In which 51 million (51 million) cars and several manufacturers will be affected. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a notice on Wednesday, July 31. Which states that airbag parts made by manufacturers ARC Automotive Inc. and the former Delphi Automotive Systems LLC have a defect and this can cause airbags to explode in an accident.

NHTSA investigators have pointed fingers at the airbag inflator. Which says that these can potentially explode and send shrapnel flying toward the people in the vehicle. Investigations revealed that some airbag inflators either had inadequate welding or had too much pressure in the canister due to the vent being closed during the welding process. According to the agency, seven people have been injured and two have died in the US and Canada since 2009 due to faulty inflators.

This is not the first time the agency has attempted to recall these two manufacturers. NHTSA had recommended a recall of both of them in September 2023. But ARC Automotive refused to do so. On the other hand, Delphi Automotive is no longer an independent company. Because it has sold its airbag business to Sweden's Autoliv. NHTSA is reportedly in the process of confirming who has the legal responsibility for the company.

NHTSA said that they are giving all the concerned automakers and suppliers 30 days to give their comments on the issue. General Motors has already issued a recall notice for about 1 million cars. Which they believe are fitted with dangerous airbag inflators. Other car manufacturers including BMW, Ford, and Volkswagen have also issued recall notices. Other manufacturers such as Stellantis, Porsche, Kia, and Hyundai are also believed to be affected by this problem.
