200 Nepali citizens involved in Russia-Ukraine war
Foreign Minister said – 100 of these people are missing; 6 were killed fighting for Russia. Nepal's Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud has said that 200 Nepali citizens are fighting on behalf of Russia as soldiers in the war between Russia and Ukraine. There is no information about 100 of these people. Earlier this month, 6 Nepalese civilians were killed fighting against Ukraine.

After this, the Nepal government had asked Russia to immediately make arrangements to send all the Nepali citizens involved in the war to Nepal by giving them compensation and other facilities. However, information about what steps Russia took after this has not been revealed yet.
100 Nepalese civilians injured
- In an interview given to a Nepali news agency, Saud said - Altogether 200 Nepali citizens are involved in the ongoing war against Ukraine as Russian soldiers. Of these, 100 are missing. Some may be injured, killed or in Ukrainian custody. We do not have accurate and concrete information about this. We have discussed this with the Russian government.
- The Foreign Minister further said- The Russian government has told us that some Nepali citizens are involved in the war. Of these, 7 have died. Some Nepali families have informed us about the disappearance of their relatives. It is being verified.
- According to the Foreign Minister – We called the Russian Ambassador and presented many things to him. We had requested him to talk to Vladimir Putin's government about our concerns and also tell us about the steps taken. We still do not know how many citizens of our country are actually fighting on the side of Russia in this war. An estimate of 200 people has been made based on some information.
Need certificate now
- Nepal's Foreign Minister said- It is difficult to take some steps in war situation. However, we have made it mandatory for Nepali citizens traveling to Russia via India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and six Gulf countries to obtain a no-objection certificate. In this they will have to tell why they want to go to Russia. Without this certificate he will not be able to go to Moscow.
- Apart from this, the Nepalese government is also trying to free its citizens from Ukraine, who are suspected to be in jails there or in military captivity for a long time. At present, the war between Israel and Hamas is also going on. Bipin Sood, a student from Nepal is also in the captivity of Hamas. Efforts are being made to get him released also.
Nepal's stance is now strict
- Earlier this month, six Nepali soldiers were killed while fighting on behalf of Russia against Ukraine and one was arrested by Ukrainian forces. After this news came out, Nepal has asked Russia to stop using its citizens.
- Actually, all the killed Nepalese were working for the Russian army as mercenaries. After this matter came to light, it has become clear that many youth of Nepal are present in the battlefield for Russia for the sake of money.
- The war between Russia and Ukraine started on 24 February 2022. After this, it was said in some media reports that Russia has a shortage of soldiers and to overcome this shortage, it is luring the youth of poor countries. The youth of Nepal were discussed the most in this matter.
- However, this is the first time that Nepal has publicly admitted that Russia is using its youth in the war against Ukraine. According to the report, the slain Nepali soldiers were not recruited as per the rules. That means they were not on payroll, rather they were all hired. This means that either they were sent to fight on the promise of paying a fixed amount or they were on contract with the Russian army.
Risk money
According to a World Bank report, most Nepali citizens go to other countries to earn money. Sometimes they also do extremely risky work. The special thing is that the amount of money these Nepali citizens send to their country is almost equal to the GDP of Nepal.
Apart from India, Nepali Gorkhas are also recruited in the British Army. This series started in 1815. At that time India was ruled by Britain. British Queen Elizabeth met the Gurkha unit several times.
