Women's Reservation Bill becomes law, President signs it: Gazette notification also issued

It was passed in the Lok Sabha on 20 September and in the Rajya Sabha on 21 September. The Women's Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Act) has now become law. President Draupadi Murmu signed it on Friday 29 September. Along with this, the government has also issued a gazette notification.

Now with this bill becoming law, 33% seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will be reserved for women. However, reservation will be implemented after fresh census and delimitation.

Now this bill will be sent to the assemblies. For it to be implemented, it must be passed in 50% of the assemblies of the country. At present there are 82 women MPs in the Lok Sabha, under the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, there will be 181 women MPs in the Lok Sabha.

The government had called a 5-day special session, in which the bill was presented.
The government had called a special session of Parliament from 18 to 22 September. Its agenda was not disclosed, the opposition had also criticized this. A cabinet meeting was called under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the night of 18 September. No press briefing was held after the meeting. Inside news came that the government may bring the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha on September 19. It turned out to be true. On September 19, the government presented the Nari Shakti Vandan Bill in the Lok Sabha.

On September 20, the bill was discussed for 7 hours in the Lok Sabha. 60 MPs participated in it. The bill was passed in slip voting in the evening. 454 votes were cast in support and 2 against.

The bill was discussed in the Rajya Sabha on 21 September. Here the bill was passed unanimously and no one voted against the bill. All 214 MPs present in the House supported the bill.

The bill was presented on the first day of functioning in the new Parliament
The Women's Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Bill) was introduced in the Lok Sabha on September 19, the first day of functioning in the new Parliament. According to this bill, 33% reservation will be implemented for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Out of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, 181 will be reserved for women. This reservation will last for 15 years. After this, if the Parliament wishes, it can extend its period. This reservation will be applicable for directly elected public representatives. That means it will not apply to Rajya Sabha and Legislative Councils of states.
