The Calcutta High Court deferred till September 4 the hearing on the PILs filed in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Supreme Court's taking of suo motu cognizance of the matter has impelled the High Court to postpone the hearing on the petitions for now. The rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College have now sparked protests all over the country. Taking cognizance on Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard the case through a suo motu.

A bench headed by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam said that since the Supreme Court's order on this issue includes all the issues pending before the High Court, it is adjourning the hearing of 14 PILs before the High Court regarding the incidents in Kolkata's government hospital till September 4. Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, who was part of the bench, reiterated the request to everyone not to disclose the identity of the victim.
