Instant messaging platform WhatsApp has announced that the company has banned more than 74 lakh accounts in India in the month of August. The company said that these accounts have been banned to deal with abuse on the platform and to comply with the IT Rules 2021. Let us tell you that earlier the company had banned about 65 lakh accounts.

Accounts banned on the basis of complaint
WhatsApp said in its monthly compliance report that the Meta-owned company banned 7,420,748 WhatsApp accounts between August 1-31 and about 3,506,905 of these accounts were banned before any reports from users. Let us tell you that WhatsApp has more than 500 million users in the country. India received 14,767 complaint reports in August, and it took action on 71 reports.
 
Why were WhatsApp accounts closed?
WhatsApp also said that it received an order from the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) in the country in August and it complied with it. The Central Government has launched the GAC, which looks into their concerns regarding content and other issues.

WhatsApp has banned these accounts under the new IT rules keeping in mind the safety of the users. Let us tell you that under the IT Act 2021, social media platforms with more than 50 lakh users have to submit a user safety report to the IT Ministry every month.

6.5 million accounts were closed in May
The instant messaging platform had taken action against more than 6.5 million (i.e. 65 lakh) accounts in India during the month of May. The report said that out of the total banned accounts, 2.42 million were actively banned even before any user reports were received from the country.
