Tesla recalls 20 lakh EVs, will finally fix this function related to autopilot

The Tesla Autopilot system has been extremely controversial and has been linked to several accidents in the US. The latest decision to issue a recall order comes nearly two years after the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into a series of crashes. Ultimately, NHTSA found that the measures used by Autopilot to keep the driver alert when Self-Drive mode is activated may be insufficient.

The recall now covers nearly all Tesla vehicles sold in the US since 2015 that also have Autopilot activated. As part of the resolution process, a software update will be made that will add additional controls and alerts to the vehicle to keep the driver more alert during self-mode driving. According to media reports, NHTSA said, "Automated technology holds great promise for improving safety. But only when used responsibly. Today's action is an example of improving automated systems by prioritizing safety."

Autopilot uses cameras and sensors on Tesla vehicles to assess the traffic around the vehicle. It also monitors the lane markers on the roads to keep the vehicle in the safe lane. However, critics of the Tesla Autopilot system have long argued that it is flawed, even though the company has argued otherwise. Tesla CEO Elon Musk had recently said that Autopilot negates the possibility of human errors and hence, can be safer than a real person. But not everyone is convinced. Anyway, not till now.

Self-drive technology is an extremely controversial topic. And it is subject to multiple regulatory approvals in many parts of the world.
