Sri Lanka defeated UAE after a tough fight, became the second team after Scotland to qualify for the Women's T20 World Cup
Sri Lanka has confirmed its place in the Women's T20 World Cup by defeating UAE in the second semi-final of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier. The Sri Lankan team became the second team to qualify for the Women's T20 World Cup. Earlier, Scotland had qualified. Let it be known that the Women's T20 World Cup will be hosted by Bangladesh from 3 to 20 October 2024.
The Sri Lankan team defeated UAE by 15 runs in the second semi-final of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier and secured their place in the Women's T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka took the field first in the Abu Dhabi match, batting first and scoring 149 runs while dropping six wickets in 20 overs. After losing seven wickets in 20 overs, the UAE team was able to respond with 134 runs. Next Tuesday, the Sri Lankan squad will take on Scotland in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier final.
Isha Oja, the captain of UAE, scored 66 runs, but it was in vain as they attempted to reach the 150-run target. UAE had a rough beginning after Fernando disallowed opener, Theertha Satish, from opening the account and bowled him out. Subsequently, the top-order batsmen bolstered UAE. It was helpful that Khushi Sharma (age 22) and Kavisha Igodeg (age 16) contributed.
After the dismissal of these two, UAE's innings collapsed and Sri Lanka made a strong comeback. The Sri Lankan bowlers ensured that UAE could not cross the target and they were successful in this. Sri Lanka restricted UAE to 134/7 and won the match by 15 runs. Captain Chamari Atapattu took a maximum of two wickets from the Sri Lankan side. Enoshi Priyadarshini, Sugandinka Kumari, and Udeshika Prabhodani got one wicket each.
Sri Lanka, who came to bat first, got a strong start with Vishami Gunaratne (45) and captain Chamari Atapattu (21) making a partnership of 52 runs. Vaishnavi Mahesh broke this partnership by stumping Chamari. Then Harshita Samarawickrama (24) made a 42-run partnership with Gunaratne for the second wicket. Mahesh gave the second blow to Sri Lanka by getting Harshita caught out by Khushi Sharma.
UAE captain Oja did not allow Gunaratne to complete his half-century and got him stumped out. Then Oja gave out LBW to Hasini Perera (15). The Sri Lankan team could score 149 runs after losing 6 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Vaishnavi Mahesh and Isha Oja took two wickets each for UAE. Kavisha Igodeg got one wicket.
