Shock to Congress from Delhi High Court, party's petition challenging Income Tax Department order rejected

The Delhi High Court dismissed the Congress party's plea challenging the Income Tax Department's order to initiate reassessment proceedings against the Congress for four years. Recently, the court had rejected the Congress's petition against the revaluation of taxes between 2014 and 2017.

Four petitions about various assessment years were dismissed by the Delhi High Court. The assessment years 2017–18, 2018–19, 2019–20, and 2020–21 were the subject of these petitions.

On March 22, the court had earlier rejected petitions from Congress contesting the Income Tax Department's reassessment of assessments for the assessment years 2014–15, 2015–16, and 2016–17.

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal's (ITAT) ruling to deny the income tax notices it received in an attempt to collect unpaid taxes from Congress totalling approximately Rs 105 crore has been upheld by the Delhi High Court.

However, the court has given liberty to the Congress party to approach ITAT afresh with its complaints. The country's oldest party had recently approached ITAT against income tax recovery and also sought a stay on the Income Tax Department's action of recovery and freezing of their bank accounts.
