Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a bike ride from Leh to Pangong Lake in Ladakh. The 52-year-old politician, who is on a two-day visit to the union territory, was accompanied by his security personnel and local officials.
Gandhi shared pictures of his bike ride on social media, saying that he was on his way to Pangong Lake, which his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, used to say was one of the most beautiful places in the world.
The bike ride comes days ahead of the polls for the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council-Kargil (LAHDC-Kargil). The Congress and the National Conference have forged a pre-poll alliance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the polls, which are scheduled to be held on September 10.
Gandhi's visit to Ladakh is his first since the union territory was carved out of Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
Union minister Kiren Rijiju took a dig at Gandhi on Twitter, saying that he should thank the Narendra Modi government for the "excellent roads" in Ladakh. Rijiju shared a video comparing the road conditions en route Pangong Lake in 2012 and 2023.
Thanks to Rahul Gandhi for promoting excellent roads of Ladakh built by the @narendramodi govt. Earlier, he also showcased how Tourism is booming in Kashmir Valley & reminded all that our "National Flag" can be peacefully hoisted at Lal Chowk in Srinagar now! pic.twitter.com/vta6HEUnXM
