Pro-Ukraine Mark Rutte to become next NATO Secretary General, Russia's concern increases
NATO: The appointment of pro-Ukraine Rutte comes at a time when Ukraine is facing constant pressure due to Russian bombing in its eastern regions, while Donald Trump, who has been questioning the existence of NATO, is once again in the race to become President in the US.

Outgoing Danish Prime Minister Mark Rutte has won the race to become the next head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, as his sole rival, Romanian President, has withdrawn his candidature. The Dutch leader (Mark Rutte) will be formally confirmed as NATO Secretary General in the coming days, taking office on October 1 after nearly a decade in charge under current chief Jens Stoltenberg.
The appointment of pro-Ukraine Rutte comes at a time when Ukraine is under constant pressure from Russian bombing in its eastern regions, and Donald Trump, who has questioned NATO's existence, is once again in the running for President of the United States.
To secure the post, Rutte quickly secured the backing of key NATO countries including the United States, Britain, France, and Germany. He first persuaded Turkey and then overcame Hungary's opposition, requiring unanimity of NATO's 32 members. The final hurdle was cleared on Thursday when Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced he was withdrawing from the race.
