No import ban on some IT products like desktop computers, DGFT clarifies

There are no import restrictions on some IT hardware products such as desktop computers. In a circular to customs officials and the industry, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), an arm of the commerce ministry, has clarified that the import of only laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers and servers is prohibited. These items are allowed under valid import authorization.

In the language of international trade, each product is classified under an HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code or tariff head. It helps in the systematic classification of goods across the world. HS code 8471 covers products related to automatic data processing machines and units. It will include a mouse, printer, scanner and CD drive.

In August 2023, the government banned some IT hardware goods. Later in October last year, it eased restrictions on imports of laptops and computers after domestic and foreign companies raised their concerns. Also, importers are allowed to bring shipments of these hardware from abroad only upon authorization subject to details of quantity and value.
