In what springs out a repeat of another rape and murder case, this time in Kolkata, a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again written a letter to Prime Minister Modi to get justice for the victim's family and to get the strictest punishment for the culprits. She informed about the same by posting a picture of the letter on social media platform X. Earlier, on 22 August, she had even written a letter to the Prime Minister. Quoting from her letter dated 22 August, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written, "But there is no response from your end to my mail through which I have drawn attention to the urgent necessity of enacting stringent central legislation for the rape cases and other atrocities on women, and girls, followed by meting out just punishment to all those responsible for the crime". However, she has mentioned in her letter that her letter has been answered by the National Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee further mentioned the work done by the state government on women's issues in her letter. She said, "Regarding Fast Track Special Courts (FTCs), 10 special POCSO courts have been approved by the state government. In addition, 88 FTCs and 62 POCSO-designated courts across the state are functioning entirely on state funding. Monitoring and dealing with the cases is completely in the hands of the courts."

Apart from this, Mamata Banerjee, while talking about the work of the people of the state machinery across the state, demanded the Center to make such laws on heinous crimes like rape and murder of women, which set an example. She said, "I request to consider a strict central law and punishment on heinous crimes like rape and murder, which sets an example in the society. In these cases, a mandatory provision of a specific time limit should be made for the disposal of cases by the trial authority."

Earlier, on August 22, following crimes against women, CM Mamata Banerjee had written to Prime Minister Modi. She had, in that letter, demanded framing a law for giving stringent punishment to the accused within 15 days in heinous cases such as rape and providing a safer atmosphere for women.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in her first letter, had written stating that it was a regular feature in the whole country that cases of rape were regularly reported. Most rape cases also include murder. About 90 cases of rape per day in the country shake the confidence and conscience of the society and the nation. There should be strict central laws providing exemplary punishment against persons involved in such brutal crimes. The establishment of fast-track special courts should also be considered for speedy trial in such cases so that the hearing can be completed within 15 days.
