Some people have drowned while trying to cross the Lamia River in Uganda, a local official said. He said that many people are still missing. Another local official said Tuesday that the death toll had risen to 33, including an army captain. Among the dead were two children who drowned in the river while trying to reach Uganda.
He said 23 bodies were buried in the village itself, while six people were taken hostage to help carry looted goods and then killed. The social worker confirmed that his team had helped bury 23 bodies. He said that the body of the Army Captain had been taken to another place.
A Congolese army spokesman said the attack in the Watalinga key area of the Beni region was carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group based in eastern Congo that has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
The ADF was formed in Uganda before moving across the border in the 1990s and has been blamed for thousands of killings over the past decade. The Congolese army said it killed six militants on Sunday night, without giving details of the operation.
