Indian Railways earned Rs 5,800 crore in 4 years by ending concessions for senior citizens, reveals RTI
Indian Railways: Railways used to give a 50% discount on train fares to women passengers and a 40% discount to male and transgender senior citizens. According to railway rules, men and transgenders aged 60 years and above and women aged 58 years and above are considered senior citizens.

Indian Railways has earned more than Rs 5,800 crore in four years by abolishing the concession given to senior citizens in train fares. This was revealed through information received under the Right to Information Act. The Railway Ministry had withdrawn the relaxation in train fares given to senior citizens after the announcement of nationwide lockdown due to Covid-19.
In the past, senior citizens who were male or transgender were eligible for a 40% train fare discount, while female passengers received a 50% discount. Railway regulations define senior citizens as women and men who are 58 years of age or older and transgender people who are 60 years of age or older. Chandra Shekhar Gaur of Madhya Pradesh filed numerous applications under the RTI Act at various points in time. These applications disclosed that the Railways received over Rs 5,875 crore in additional revenue between March 20, 2020, and January 31, 2024.
