Hamas had killed about 1,200 people in Israel and taken more than 200 people hostage while waging the war. More than 40 thousand people have been killed in Gaza and surrounding Palestinian areas in Israeli attacks. Israel has also lost more than 600 soldiers in the war with Hamas but has also killed thousands of Hamas terrorists and people associated with them. Israel has succeeded in killing Ismail Haniyeh, the chief of Hamas's political wing. Haniyeh was assassinated today, Wednesday, 31 July, in Tehran, the capital of Iran. An Iranian security guard guarding Haniyeh was also killed along with him.
Haniyeh had gone to Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's new President Masoud Pezeshkian. He was assassinated during this visit. Iran's army, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has started investigating the matter.
Hamas has suffered a lot in the war against Israel so far and many of its big and important people have been killed. Haniyeh was very important not only for Hamas's military unit but also for Hamas' political representation around the world. In such a situation, his killing is a big setback for Hamas.
