Government will not ban the import of laptops, laptops can become cheap again
The government had said that banning the import of laptops and computers would increase the hardware market in India, but this decision has been withdrawn after criticism from many countries.
The Government of India has withdrawn its order in which it was said to ban laptop import. A notification was issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in August stating that the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers and ultra-small computers and servers was banned from October 31. This means that laptops, computers etc. can be imported into India from other countries till 31st October but not after that.
Now this decision has been withdrawn. The government had said that this decision has been taken regarding data leak. Most of the laptops in India are imported from China. Apart from this, it was said by the government that banning the import of laptops and computers will increase the hardware market in India, but after criticism from many countries, this decision has been withdrawn.
Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwa confirmed
Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said in a press conference that no ban has been imposed on the import of laptops and computers, but it is basically monitoring, which we are doing. This has nothing to do with sanctions.
He further said, 'There is no such restriction on laptops. All we are saying is that whoever is importing these laptops will have to be strictly monitored, so that we can keep an eye on these imports. India will not impose licensing requirements on imports of laptops and computers but will only monitor their incoming shipments.
The industry suffered huge losses
Today, even after two months, the Indian government has withdrawn the decision to ban laptop imports, but the laptop and computer industry has suffered huge losses due to this. Due to shortage of laptops and computers in the last two months, their prices have also increased significantly.
Affected from Apple to Reliance Jio
This decision of the government had an impact on companies like Apple, Acer, HP, Dell and Reliance Jio. These companies had also appealed to the government to remove this ban. Reliance Jio was also troubled by this ban, because Jio's recently launched JioBook is also imported from China.
