Car Crash Detection

Google is expanding the reach of its car crash detection feature and making it available in India and several other countries. Originally launched on Pixel phones in the United States in 2019, the feature automatically contacts emergency services when a serious car accident is detected.

How to turn on car crash detection feature?

  • To use this feature on your device, it must have a SIM card that runs on Google's flagship Pixel phones. Also, it only works in the country of your phone's SIM, not when roaming. Car crash detection does not work in airplane mode or when battery saver is on.
  • Open the Personal Safety app on your phone
  • Tap "Features"
  • Scroll down to "Car Crash Detection"
  • Tap "Set Up." When asked to share your location, select "Allow while the app is in use"
  • When asked to share your microphone and physical activity, select "Allow"

How does car crash detection work?
Car crash detection works by using data like your phone's location, motion sensors, and nearby sounds to identify potentially serious car accidents.

It requires specific permissions like location, physical activity and microphone access to work. If an accident is detected, your Pixel phone can automatically call emergency services using Android's emergency location service. Which gives them information about your location and status.

What happens when your Pixel phone detects a crash?
With car crash detection enabled, your phone can detect serious car accidents and immediately alert you in several ways. When such an event occurs, your phone will vibrate, sound an audible alarm, and ask if you need help through an audible and visible prompt on your phone screen.

If you respond within 60 seconds, you will have the option to call emergency services or cancel the call.

To call emergency services:
Verbally state “Emergency” or slide the designated slider to “Call 911 and notify contacts” (if you have Emergency Sharing activated).
Your phone will automatically activate the speakerphone.

To cancel a call:
Say “Cancel” or tap “I'm OK.”
Your phone will not initiate emergency calls.

If you don't respond within 60 seconds:
Your phone will automatically activate speakerphone. Will try to call emergency services, announce the occurrence of a car accident, and share the approximate location of your device.
The message will be repeated, but you can speak over it. To stop the message and keep the call, tap "Cancel."
