While competing in Changzhou, China, on Thursday, Indian women shuttler Malvika Bansod entered the quarterfinals of the China Open badminton tournament. She outplayed higher-ranked and two-time Commonwealth Games medalist Christie Gilmour of Scotland 21-17, 19-21, 21-16 in a hard-fought match in the round of 16.

This win has propelled her to be the first female Indian singles shuttler after Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu to make it to the quarterfinals of a BWF Super 1000 event. Now, in the quarters, Bansod faces off against two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi. Bansod is the only Indian player left who is challenged in China Open 2024.

The triumph in the match, it was, has been regarded as a dream for the 23-year-old Indian shuttler as he said, "For the first time I will play in a quarterfinal of the Super 1000 event. That's something like a dream. This is my dream to come into real life. It is my biggest achievement so far. Even before coming to this tournament, I would dream of how it would be to reach the quarterfinals. Now I am in the top-8, so it is a good feeling.".
