The man who broke into the home of then US Parliament Speaker Nancy Pelosi, held her hostage, and attacked her husband with a hammer was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Friday. Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley sentenced David Deppe, 44.

Last November, jurors found David guilty in the case. Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison sentence. The attack on Paul Pelosi, then 82, took place just days before the 2022 midterm elections, and the entire video of the incident was captured on a police body camera, causing a stir in the political world.

Paul Pelosi received two head injuries. He also suffered injuries to his right arm and hand. Depapp received the maximum sentence possible in both cases—20 years for attempted kidnapping and 30 years for assault—from Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley. The sentences will be spoken one after the other. The U.S. Attorney's Office stated in a motion made in court this afternoon that DePape was not allowed to speak before sentencing and that this could present a problem.

David had also confessed to the police about attacking him with a hammer. On this, the judge said that attacking a federal officer by entering his house is an unprecedented act in the history of the country.
