Scientists have found a virus more dangerous than coronavirus (COVID-19). These viruses have been found in the ice sheet frozen in Greenland, Denmark. These can slow down the speed of melting ice due to global warming. These viruses eat algae deposited on the ice sheet. Often the ice starts melting rapidly due to algae. According to the report of Science Daily, research published in the Microbiome Journal by scientists of Aarhus University of Denmark stated that such large viruses have been found for the first time in Greenland. These have a much larger genome sequence than normal viruses. They usually infect algae in the sea.

Laura Perini of the University's Department of Environmental Science stated that while we don't know much about this virus right now, we believe it can be used to reduce ice melting caused by algae blooms. Despite its large size, this virus is invisible to the naked eye.

The researchers discovered large viruses while studying two different coloured ice samples. The concentration of these viruses was higher in samples containing more algae. Large viruses are still unknown organisms. They are quite distinct from other viruses. They possess numerous active genes that allow them to repair DNA, replicate, and transcribe.

Generally, viruses are much smaller than bacteria. The size of a normal virus is 20-200 nanometers, while normal bacteria are 2-3 micrometers. That is, a normal virus is about 1,000 times smaller than bacteria, but the size of a large virus can be up to 2.5 micrometers. Still, they are not visible to the eyes or microscope. These can be seen only with special equipment.
