Virat Kohli came out in support of Rohit Sharma, called this rule of BCCI bad, expressed his displeasure
Kohli told Geo Cinema, 'I agree with Rohit. Entertainment is one aspect of the game but there is no balance.’ The Impact Player rule was introduced in the 2023 IPL season and has seen a massive change in the teams' approach to the game.
Ever since the Impact Player rule came into existence. Big scores are being chased easily in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Bowlers are facing losses due to the introduction of this rule. There is not much left for all-rounders. This rule of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was criticized by Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Now former team captain Virat Kohli has also come in his support. Kohli also believes that with the introduction of this rule, the balance of the game has been disturbed.
Kohli told Geo Cinema, 'I agree with Rohit. Entertainment is one aspect of the game but there is no balance.’ The Impact Player rule was introduced in the 2023 IPL season and has seen a massive change in the teams' approach to the game. The three highest scores in IPL history were scored in the 2024 season (SRH vs RCB, SRH vs MI, and KKR vs DC.)
The IPL's all-time leading run scorer said, “The bowlers are feeling what they need to do. I have never experienced such a situation where bowlers think that they will hit a four or a six on every ball. We are playing high-level cricket and in my opinion, it should not be so dominant. It is a beauty to have an equal balance between bat and ball. Not every team has a great bowler like Bumrah (Jasprit) or Rashid Khan.”
With 661 runs scored in 13 games so far this season, Virat Kohli is the current Indian Premier League Orange Cap holder. And to make matters even more remarkable, he is batting at a strike rate of 155.16, which is the best in his storied IPL career. He credits this achievement to the implementation of the Impact Player Rule.
Kohli said, "I am telling you, with an extra batsman there is a reason why I am playing with a strike rate of over 200 in the powerplay. I know there is a batsman waiting at number eight as well. "It seems to have thrown the balance off and it's not just me, but a lot of people feel that way."
Virat's comments stem from Rohit Sharma's comments in which the Team India captain strongly criticized the rule impacting players as the captain believes it hinders the development of all-rounders and will have a negative impact on the national team.
Rohit Sharma said on the Club Prayer Podcast, "I'm not a big fan of the Impact Player. You're taking a lot out of the game to make it a bit of entertainment for the people around. But if you really look at the cricket aspect of it. I can say that you have a lot of examples – people like Washington Sundar, and Shivam Dubey are not getting a chance to bowl, which is not a good thing for us (the India team), I don't know what you can do about it, but I'm not a fan of it, to be honest."
