American automaker Tesla has said that it is recalling 1.85 million vehicles in the United States. Due to a defect in the software, the hood is not able to be detected when it is unlocked.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that the unlocked hood can open completely and obstruct the driver's view. Which increases the risk of an accident.
NHTSA said that Tesla began releasing over-the-air software updates to fix this problem in mid-June. The updated software detects the open hood and alerts drivers.
The recall affects 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles. Tesla said the vehicles were equipped with hood latches produced in China by Magna Closers Co Ltd.
The automaker said it began investigating customer complaints of hoods opening without reason in some Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China in March. After which it began to latch hardware recovery and in-service vehicle inspections.
However, there were fewer such incidents in Europe and North America. Tesla said it began engineering studies to inspect the hood latch assembly in the region last month. And decided to issue the recall earlier this month.
Tesla said it has received three reports of the issue in the United States. However, there have been no reports of any accidents or injuries related to the recall.
The recall is Tesla's largest recall since December. That's when it recalled 2.03 million US vehicles - or nearly all of its cars on US roads at the time - to install new safety measures in its Autopilot system.
However, after reports of 20 crashes involving vehicles with the new Autopilot update, the NHTSA launched an investigation, saying it identified "numerous concerns" regarding the recall.
Tesla last week posted its worst quarterly profit margin in five years, reflecting the EV maker's struggle to maintain auto sales amid a slowdown in demand.
