Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to visit New Delhi on an official visit to India on 21 and 22 June 2024. This is her second visit to India this month.

She travelled to India on June 9, 2024, to attend PM Narendra Modi's swearing-in event, and she had a brief interaction with him during that time. However, when she visits India next week, the two leaders will hold in-depth conversations on all aspects of bilateral ties.

The significance of Hasina's visit has grown due to her upcoming trip to Beijing next month. According to reports from China, significant announcements would be made during the Bangladesh Prime Minister's next visit. In such a case, experts say PM Hasina is visiting New Delhi because of the sensitivity of India-China relations and to avoid any confusion regarding her visit to Beijing.

After winning the January 2024 general elections, PM Hasina has not yet made an official visit to any country. Her decision regarding the China visit was already taken. Sources say that the proposal came from Bangladesh itself and that Hasina wants to make an official visit to New Delhi before the Beijing visit. This decision has been taken in view of Hasina's very close relations with the Government of India.

India and Bangladesh relations have become very strong in the last ten years under the leadership of Modi and Hasina. Before the Bangladesh general elections, when the US was trying to put pressure on the Hasina government, India indirectly helped her. During this period, work has been done on many connectivity projects in Bangladesh with the help of India. Military relations between the two countries have been strengthened. The strategy of connecting the states of Northeast India with Bangladesh is continuously working.

The Hasina government has definitely taken help from China in infrastructure projects but has not allowed China's influence to dominate. In these circumstances, Hasina's future visit to India has special importance. Sources say that China has indicated that it is ready to help Bangladesh with a huge amount of money for cleaning the Teesta River. This issue is sensitive for India because if Chinese companies get the contract, it will mean that it will also get all the data related to the Teesta River.

It is believed that a similar proposal from China can be given to Bangladesh from India. On the other hand, despite the agreement between India and Bangladesh regarding the sharing of Teesta water, it has not been given final approval by the Government of India.

This has been mentioned in the last four official talks between PM Modi and PM Hasina. It is said that the Indian government is unable to take a decision on this due to the objection of the West Bengal government. In such a situation, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh can once again request PM Modi to implement the Teesta water-sharing treaty.
