Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced 'PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme' to provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to the people of the country. "For sustainable development and well-being of the people, we are launching PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme," he said in a series of posts on 'X'.
"This project, with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore, aims to light up 1 crore homes by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month," he said. The Prime Minister said that the amount of money given directly into people's bank accounts will be substantial. From subsidies to heavily concessional bank loans, the central government will ensure that no cost burden falls on the people.
"All stakeholders will be integrated with a national online portal which will further enhance convenience," he said. Modi said urban local bodies and panchayats in their jurisdictions will be required to popularize the scheme at the grassroots level. Promotion of rooftop solar systems (solar energy on rooftops) will be encouraged.
"Also, this scheme will generate more income for the people, lower electricity bills and generate employment," he said. The Prime Minister urged all residential consumers, especially the youth, to promote solar energy and sustainable progress.
