Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has reached the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics. In the pre-quarterfinals, she defeated world champion Yui Susaki of Japan 3-2. After that, she defeated Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarter-finals. This is Vinesh's third Olympics and the country will expect gold from her. Susaki is the reigning world champion and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist. Phogat was trailing 0-1 in the first round but turned the situation in her favor with 2 points in the last 30 seconds. The Indian player was on the defensive for most of the match but in the later stages, she applied herself fully to win at the Champ-de-Mars Arena.

Vinesh's father Mahavir Phogat said, "The quarterfinal match was a close contest, it was not an ordinary match but a match that decided the gold medal because Japan's Susaki is a strong contender for the medal. Vinesh has staked a claim for the medal by winning this match. I and the whole country are confident that the dream of gold will come true. I had given her some tips against Japan and told her to play cautiously in the first round, she did so which benefited her."

Vinesh's father said that Vinesh's journey to reach here has been challenging. Her preparation was good in the 2016 Olympics as well but she had to drop out due to injury. She had suffered an injury before 2020 and had to pay the price for it. But she made a comeback and worked hard to reach here.
