Now no one will wear number 7, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's jersey will be retired, big decision of BCCI
MS Dhoni No 7 jersey retired: BCCI has decided to retire Mahendra Singh Dhoni's number 7 jersey. This has come to light in many media reports. Earlier in 2017, the signature number 10 jersey of great batsman Sachin Tendulkar was retired forever.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire the iconic number 7 jersey of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, three years after he retired as an international cricketer. The move marks a mark of respect for Dhoni's legacy in Indian cricket, which will mark the end of an era with his retirement.
It is a gesture that acknowledges his immense influence on the game. It also ensures that his jersey number will always be associated with his remarkable achievements and leadership on the field. The former captain, at number 7, led India to all three white-ball ICC titles – T20 World Cup 2007, ODI World Cup 2011 and Champions Trophy 2013.
Sachin Tendulkar was the only other cricketer to receive such an honor. In 2017, his iconic number 10 jersey was also retired, in tribute to his illustrious career and contribution to the game. According to an Indian Express report, the BCCI has informed the national team players, especially the new players, that they do not have the option of numbers associated with Tendulkar and Dhoni.
A senior board official told The Indian Express, "Young players and current Indian team players have been asked not to choose MS Dhoni's No. 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to adopt Dhoni's T-shirt in recognition of his contribution to the game. A new player could not get jersey number 7 and number 10 was already out of the list of available numbers." Whereas ICC usually allows players to choose any number from 1 to 100. There are limitations on the options available for jersey numbers in India.
A BCCI official said, "At present around 60 numbers have been given to the regular players and contenders of the Indian team. So even if a player is out of the team for almost a year, we do not give his number to any new player. This means that a recently debuted player has just over 30 numbers to choose from." Retiring jerseys is a way for teams to pay tribute to these legends and ensure that their impact is always remembered.
