Narendra Modi created history, Modi, who started his political journey in Gujarat, has many records to his name
PM Modi 3rd Term: Despite the challenges in the elections, 73-year-old Modi will remain the center point of Indian politics in the coming years. After entering electoral politics as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, Modi will have to deal with the sharp turns of coalition politics for the first time. He led his party to victory and power in Gujarat in 2002, 2007, and 2012 and then at the Center in 2014 and 2019.
On Sunday (June 9), Prime Minister Narendra Modi created history by taking oath of office for the third consecutive term. He became the first non-Congress leader and the second leader after Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve this feat.
The BJP suffered a severe blow in states like Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, though, as the Congress and its Indian allies also fared well in the elections. The largest success for any pre-election alliance, according to Modi, was the 293 seats won by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Modi, who is 73 years old, will continue to be the main figure in Indian politics for some time to come, despite the difficulties in the elections. It will be Modi's first experience navigating the complex ins and outs of coalition politics, having entered electoral politics as Gujarat's chief minister in 2001.
Since leading the BJP for the first time in the Gujarat assembly elections in the state after the 2002 Godhra train burning, Modi has never looked back and has changed the very essence and sentiments of politics. Despite severe criticism in 2002, he has gone from strength to strength and has become a winning mix of Hindutva and development for his party.
He led his party to victory and power in Gujarat in 2002, 2007, and 2012 and then at the Centre in 2014 and 2019. PM Modi is facing the strongest opposition since he first took office in 2014. Critics have also questioned his ability to set the political agenda on his own terms. The opposition has hurt the BJP in several states, especially in the saffron bastion of Uttar Pradesh, where the SP-Congress alliance has outplayed the BJP-led coalition.
Having seen the uncertainties of politics during his tenure of over a decade and a half in the BJP organization, Modi has projected a picture of unshakable confidence when analyzing the results. BJP leaders have said that the BJP has won a near-absolute majority in the Lok Sabha elections in Odisha and a majority in the Assembly for the first time, doubled its number of MPs in Telangana and opened its account for the first time in Kerala, which shows the strength of PM Modi's popularity.
As Modi prepares for a third term with trusted and experienced people around him, the BJP hopes he will prove his critics wrong.
