Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) building built in Gujarat today i.e. on 17th December. This is the largest interconnected office building and larger than the US Defense Headquarters Pentagon. It has more than 4500 offices. Earlier, PM Modi inaugurated the new integrated terminal at Surat Airport and also conducted a road show.

Surat Diamond Bourse has been built at a cost of Rs 3,500 crore. Construction of the building started in February 2015. Its work was completed in April 2022. SDB has been established by Surat's diamond industry as a one-stop hub for both manufacturing and trading. Surat manufactures 92% of the world's natural diamonds.
Architecture students should be shown this building
PM Modi said- This building should be shown to architecture students across the country. To show what the five elements are, invite those who work in the world of landscape also here.
Modi said that two more big things have been done today. Today itself the new terminal of Surat has been inaugurated and secondly Surat Airport has got the status of International Airport. The years-old demand of the Surats has been fulfilled.
Surat to Dubai flights are starting from today. Flights to Hong Kong will start very soon. There are now three international airports in Gujarat. Apart from diamond, every sector including textile, education, steel will benefit from this.
Name of this building in Guinness World Records
The name of this building was registered in the Guinness World Records in August this year. This building is spread over 35.54 acres. Its built up area is 67 lakh square feet. Earlier, the record of the world's largest office complex was held by America's Pentagon. The built up area of Pentagon is 65 lakh square feet.
This megastructure built in Surat has 9 ground towers and 15 floors. Nine rectangular towers are connected by a central spine. It has more than 4,500 office spaces ranging from 300 sq ft to 1 lakh sq ft. The building has received platinum ranking from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
Apart from offices, the Diamond Bourse campus has facilities such as safe deposit vaults, conference halls, multipurpose halls, restaurants, banks, customs clearance houses, convention centres, exhibition centres, training centres, entertainment areas and clubs. In the last few weeks, many diamond trading companies have started their offices here.
There are 4 major reasons for creating Surat Diamond Bourse:
- To promote import, export and trading of diamonds, gems and jewelery from India.
- To provide state-of-the-art infrastructure to those involved in diamond manufacturing and trading.
- To expand business related to Diamond, Gems & Jewelery including cutting, polishing and processing.
- To develop India as a modern diamond, gems and jewelery market in the world.
- The aim is to make this building a convenient hub for more than 65,000 diamond experts.
Delhi based architect has designed the building
This building has been designed by Delhi based architects Sonali and Manit Rastogi and their firm Morphogenesis. Manit Rastogi said on the structure of the building and the challenge of making it - The biggest challenge of making the building was how to design a building in which about 65,000 people can come and go.
65,000 people is like a football stadium. This is also a high security zone. All its occupants will come in and out of the building at the same time. That is why a building in the shape of a vertebra has been built. The spine is made up of a series of small bones called vertebrae. Similarly, this building is also connected to each other.
