The deadline to file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the financial year 2022-23 is July 31, 2023. Indian citizens with income exceeding the basic exemption limit have a legal obligation to file their ITRs.

There are two ways to pay income tax online:

  • Through the Income Tax e-filing website: You can log in to the website and generate a challan. You can then pay the tax through a variety of methods, including net banking, credit/debit cards, and UPI.
  • Through the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) system: You can generate a challan through the e-filing website and then pay the tax through NEFT.

To generate a challan, you will need the following information:

  • Your PAN number
  • The assessment year
  • The amount of tax payable
  • Your bank account details

Once you have generated the challan, you can pay the tax through any of the methods mentioned above.

Here are the steps on how to file an ITR online:

  1. Go to the Income Tax e-filing website.
  2. Click on "Login" and enter your PAN number and password.
  3. Click on "e-File" and select the relevant assessment year.
  4. Click on "Start new filing" and select the appropriate ITR form.
  5. Enter your personal and financial information.
  6. Calculate your tax liability.
  7. Pay the tax online or through NEFT.
  8. Submit your ITR.

If you miss the deadline to file your ITR, you will be liable to pay a penalty. The penalty amount depends on the number of days late you are in filing your ITR.
