Alaska Airlines said it would buy Hawaiian Airlines for $1.9 billion if it receives regulatory approval. If this deal is completed, its position as the fifth-largest airline in the country will be further strengthened.
According to a joint press release, the two airlines may take up to 18 months to finalize the terms of the agreement. United Airlines will have a fleet of 365 widebody aircraft with access to 138 destinations.
Alaska Airlines, based in Seattle, primarily serves the western US. Whereas Hawaii's capital Honolulu will become its second main centre. Both companies said Hawaii residents will benefit from expanded service to the U.S. and the merger will create new connections for travelers across the U.S., into Asia, and across the Pacific.
