Good news for army personnel, new centers including joint replacement, orthopedics will open in Army Hospital

The state-of-the-art Army Hospital has started working on infrastructure expansion. Under this, three new medical centers—oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic, and joint replacement—will open in the Army Hospital within the next one or two years. This information was given by Army Hospital Commandant Lieutenant General Ajit Neelkantan on Saturday. He said this 1200-bed hospital is a 'quaternary' facility and mainly treats patients referred from tertiary or similar-level hospitals.

No hospital can remain relevant unless it expands and is equipped with the latest technology and facilities," says Commandant Ajit Neelkantan. That is why we have recently started the construction of a full-fledged oncology or cancer center with all the latest facilities. An ophthalmology, or eye, center is under construction. And an orthopedic and joint replacement center is also coming up. We hope that these will be ready in the coming one to two years.

The Army Hospital in Delhi has recently started a skin bank facility. This is the first such facility to be opened within the AFMS. The skin bank, set up in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, was formally inaugurated on June 18 by DGMS (Army) Lieutenant General Arindam Chatterjee but got its first skin donation only on May 29. The donor was a woman who was the mother of a soldier who died during treatment at AHRR.

The Army Hospital sprawls over 256 acres in Delhi and represents the apex of medical institutions in the Armed Forces Medical Services. According to Lt General Neelakantan, "We have 35 departments in the Army Hospital, including specialties and super specialties departments. We have about 300 doctors and 300 nursing officers. Also, we have many outsourced paramedical staff, numbering about 1,000. Apart from these, there are 300 defense civilians.".
