This operation is being conducted by three ICG ships Sujit, Sachet, and Samrat. A cargo ship caught fire near Karwar in Karnataka on Friday. All three ships are continuously trying to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading further for more than 12 hours.
In its latest update, the Indian Coast Guard said, 'Indian Coast Guard ships Sujeet, Sachet, and Samrat have been trying to control the fire for more than 12 hours, to prevent the fire from spreading. As of 7 am on July 20, ICG Dornier aircraft from Goa is conducting an aerial assessment of the ship, with an additional aircraft from Kochi deployed for search and rescue. ETV Water Lily departed from Mumbai on July 19 and reached the spot by July 21.'
Late Friday night, an emergency message was received at the Mumbai-based Indian Coast Guard control room about a major fire on board MV Maersk Frankfurt, 50 nm from shore. ICG Dornier and ships Sachet, Sujeet, and Samrat were mobilized and dispatched to action immediately. Another aircraft was also mobilized to augment search and rescue efforts. The Coast Guard said firefighting operations are currently conducted to avert any disaster and to ensure the safety of the ship and its crew.
The ship has been advised to alter course and is now on course 180 at a speed of 6 knots, but south-westerly winds and strong waves are proving an obstacle to attempts at extinguishing it.
