Its aftershocks caused widespread devastation and the death toll exceeded 200. Officials said 100 were still unaccounted for. A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck on New Year's Day, destroying hundreds of buildings, causing fires and damaging infrastructure on the Noto Peninsula.
