The land-for-job scam is from 2004 to 2009. At that time there was a UPA government at the Center and Lalu Yadav was the Union Railway Minister at that time. The CBI alleges that in lieu of a job in the Railways, Lalu got land and properties written in the names of his family members. People were given jobs in different zones of the Railways in Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Hajipur. In return, the Lalu family got the people to write their land.

According to the CBI, Lalu Yadav's family acquired more than 1 lakh square feet of land in Bihar for just Rs 26 lakh, while according to the circle rate of that time, the land was worth about Rs 4.39 crore. The special thing is that in most cases of land transfer, the land owner was paid in cash. In this case, CBI registered a new case of corruption in May 2022 against Lalu and his family members.
