To address its medical shortage, Britain is once again considering a fast-track recruitment of 2000 doctors from India. The goal is to fill the gap in the medical workforce with highly qualified medical professionals. After completing six to twelve months of post-graduate training, the first batch of these doctors will be assigned to hospitals in the United Kingdom. It is important to note that these doctors will not need to pass the Professionals and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) exam to obtain employment in Britain after completing the training. It has been informed that the British Government will provide direct funding for this project.

It is thought that the government responded directly to the hospitals of the renowned National Health Service (NHS) in Britain by taking this action. The doctors recruited in this will not get permanent jobs, but the experience gained from this will be important for the doctors as well as the countries. At the same time, some people are also expressing concern about the brain drain of doctors from India.

According to experts, recruitment of foreign-trained doctors into the NHS is not new. 25 to 30 per cent of foreign-trained doctors have been used in this service. According to Oxford University's Migration Observatory, an unexpectedly large number of foreign healthcare workers have come to Britain in 2022-23, with the highest number of doctors coming from India at 20 per cent. The number of people coming from India in the nursing staff was 46 per cent. After this come health workers from Nigeria, Pakistan and the Philippines. According to the data, the number of Indians who obtained the Certificate of Sponsorship in 2022 was the highest at 33 per cent. After this, there were workers from Zimbabwe and Nigeria in this case.

Under this program, NHS has opened training centres in many major hospitals in India. These training centres have been built in major cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi, Nagpur, Gurugram, Bangalore, Chennai, Indore and Mysore.

According to doctors working in Britain, providing post-graduate level training to doctors in India by the NHS is an important step. This kind of cooperation between the two countries in healthcare is a new step and sets new standards of cooperation in healthcare. This will increase cooperation between the two countries. Also, such efforts will increase the level of healthcare in the world.

Data indicates that since 2017, there has been a rise in the number of non-Europeans employed in Britain. Between July and September, the number of open positions in the healthcare industry reached 217,000. Following this, 57700 workers received skilled worker visas in the previous year. An estimated 30,000 doctors from India are currently employed by the esteemed NHS in the United Kingdom.
